Students at the Middlebury C.V. Starr Schools Abroad will be tested on their language competence (where applicable) both upon arrival and prior to departure (year-long students may be tested at the mid-point as well). Students will also be tested on their intercultural competence by completing the Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI) twice during the program. This project examines the effect of Middlebury’s Study Abroad programs on students’ intercultural competence (the ability to think and act in interculturally appropriate ways). As one’s experience of cultural differences becomes more complex, one’s potential competence in intercultural relations increases. The results will be used to develop programming to further support the development of intercultural competence.
