Travel to the U.K.

TSA Regulations

The Transportation Security Administration regulates what items may be carried aboard the aircraft and, as these regulations are subject to change frequently, you should consult their website close to your date of departure. Possessing certain items while going through security may result in fines or, in the case of firearms, may be considered a criminal offense.

Pepper Spray

PLEASE DO NOT BRING PEPPER SPRAY (or equivalent) DEVICES INTO THE UK.  The possession of Pepper Spray or an equivalent device is illegal in the UK.  “Any weapon of whatever description designed or adapted for the discharge of any noxious liquid, gas or other thing” is a Prohibited Weapon, under Section 5(1) of the Official text of the Firearms Act 1968.

Airline Luggage Regulations

Students should contact their airline to confirm exact luggage allowances. We strongly suggest you stick to these guidelines, or be prepared to pay excess baggage fees, which can be quite expensive. We also suggest that you consider insuring your luggage through a comprehensive travel insurance policy.

Travel Arrangements

Students are responsible for their own travel arrangements. We recommend using a student travel agency for flexibility and the best rates:

Consult the Middlebury-CMRS Calendar when planning your travel dates.

All students are required to arrive at Middlebury-CMRS between 9am and 5pm on the designated arrival day  and are required to attend orientation.

Autumn Semester 2020 begins on Wednesday, 2 September 2020.

Spring Semester 2021 begins on Wednesday, 6 January 2021.

You should arrive on the date indicated, not earlier or later, unless there are quite exceptional circumstances and prior permission is given by Middlebury-CMRS.  You should plan to arrive between 9.00 a.m. and 5.00 p.m.

Please upload your flight details to the ‘arrival plans’ post-decision questionnaire on your Middlebury account  (arrival date, time, airline, flight number and airport). If you are in the UK prior to your arrival date, please indicate the time of day you expect to arrive in Oxford and whether you expect to be met at the bus station or will make your own way to Middlebury-CMRS.

It is especially important that you do not plan your return to the United States or travel to another destination before the program’s end date. Requests to leave the program early will not be granted.
