Students studying in Argentina for more than 90 days must apply for, and receive, either a student visa or an entry permit, known as the TIE24, before arriving in the country. Below are general instructions and requirements for applying for a TIE24 entry permit as of the most recent update of this handbook. Students are responsible for obtaining their own entry permit.

Applying for a TIE24 Entry Permit

Argentina offers an entirely online application process for an entry permit called TIE24. Most students who are studying in Argentina are eligible to apply for a TIE24, rather than a student visa, although eligibility may vary based on nationality. Students who will be traveling to Argentina on a passport other than a U.S. passport are encouraged to speak with the advisor for the School in Argentina as early as possible to confirm their eligibility for the TIE24.

When eligible, students are strongly encouraged to use the TIE24 process as it requires no in-person visit to a consulate and can be completed from anywhere outside of Argentina. The information below refers to the online TIE24 application process. Students are encouraged to submit their applications as soon as they receive the required university documentation.

Please refer to this How-To Guide when completing the TIE24.

Tips for completing your TIE24 application:

Know which consulate will be processing your visa: Although students will not need to visit a consulate as a part of the online TIE24 application, you will need to indicate which consulate should process your application. This should be the consulate that has jurisdiction over your permanent address. Please refer to the Argentina: Embassies & Consulates page in this handbook for a list of consulates in the U.S. and their jurisdictions.

Wait to submit your application until you receive your university documents: You will receive at least two documents from your host university in Argentina: your carta de aceptación (acceptance letter) and your autorización de ingreso al país (entry authorization). You will also receive a program acceptance letter from the Middlebury School in Argentina. You need to receive these documents before starting your TIE24 application.

Double check your university documents: Make sure that all of the information listed on your university documents is correct. This information is also entered into the Argentinian Migraciones system and any errors will prevent you from being able to apply for your TIE24.

Once you submit your application, watch your email carefully! Your consulate will contact you with payment information in order to process your entry permit. Your payment, which in most cases can be made via credit card, is often due within just a few days of the consulate emailing you. Watch your inbox carefully (including Spam and Junk folders) and respond right away once the consulate contacts you.

Students Studying in Argentina for More than 6 Months

In addition to the required university documents, students studying in Argentina for more than 6 months will need to obtain a translated, apostilled FBI background check, or equivalent background check from their home country. Obtaining an apostilled FBI background check requires several steps and the entire process can take up to two months, so students should plan accordingly.

Steps for Obtaining a Translated, Apostilled FBI Background Check

There are several steps to obtain an FBI background check:
(1) Submit a request for a background check online here.
(2) Obtain a set of fingerprints either electronically at one of the designated U.S. post offices, or in ink on the approved FBI fingerprint card and taken by a police or sheriff’s department
(3) Your background check will be emailed to you as a PDF. Once you receive the background check from the FBI:
(a) Print a copy
(b) Send the copy to be apostilled by the U.S. Department of State
Please note: The background check does not need to be notarized before it can be apostilled; it is considered to be automatically notarized when it arrives from the FBI.
(4) Obtain a certified translation of your apostilled background check.
