Through an internship in a host organization, students will gain more in-depth experience and exposure to the host culture and work environment. This experience will also provide students with new knowledge and skills which can lead to other professional opportunities in the future. Students will receive instructions for applying for an internship prior to their departure for Argentina or Uruguay.

Internships are not guaranteed for any participant. Placements are dependent on availability, previous experience, qualifications, and the language ability of each student. Credit-bearing internships are graded A-F and require substantive academic work in the form of a final paper. Students who agree to pursue internships are expected to follow through with their commitment until the end of the semester. Students who withdraw from a credit-bearing internship after the on-site registration period will earn an “F” and will be ineligible to enroll in another course. Not all U.S. institutions grant academic credit for an internship. Students must confirm with their home institution that they are eligible to receive credit for an internship prior to arriving in-country.

More information about participating in an internship in Argentina can be found here. More information about participating in an internship in Uruguay can be found here.

Students wishing to contribute their time and service to the community may choose to work as volunteers with organizations in the non-profit sector. The staff in Argentina or Uruguay can help students find volunteer opportunities.

Other options that facilitate student immersion include sports, cultural, and outdoor activities. The staff is available to advise students on the wide range of possibilities the cities have to offer. The staff at the Schools in Argentina and Uruguay also organize local cultural activities for students throughout the semester. Students may also wish to review opportunities and recommendations from program alumni on the School in Argentina Student Life page here, or on the School in Uruguay Student Life page here.

All students at the School in Argentina will be able to take part in a programa de tutores estudiantiles, or buddy program, while abroad. This program pairs new international students with local students who have expressed interest in connecting with and helping international students as they settle in. These local students are a great resource not only for navigating the host city and host university, but for meeting people and getting involved with activities and events as well.

In some cases, students’ host universities facilitate the program (typically, the private universities) and will match students with their buddies. In these instances, international students must sign up for the program in advance, which all Middlebury School in Argentina students are strongly encouraged to do. Students who are attending a host university that does not facilitate its own programa de padrinos will be matched with a buddy by the in-country Middlebury staff. In most cases, students will first connect with their buddy via email prior to their arrival.

Before arriving, each student attending the Middlebury School in Uruguay will, with the assistance of the assistant director, select an extracurricular course, workshop, or activity to participate in, with the goal of helping the student to integrate into their host city and to start building community locally from the get-go. The assistant director will enroll the student in their chosen activity, and participation during the first month will be subsidized by the Middlebury School in Uruguay. After the first month, the student can then choose to continue their participation in the activity for the duration of their time in Uruguay at their own expense, if applicable.

Volunteer Work
