While Middlebury School in Japan participants may receive priority consideration for dormitory placement, please know that it is a privilege, and certainly not a guaranteed process. Each dormitory is student-governed, and student leaders spend a lot of time reading everyone’s application essays to make final decisions as well as to arrange roommates. Please be respectful of the process and submit the necessary documents in a timely manner (to be sent directly to ICU’s housing office).

Life in a Japanese dormitory will provide you with an excellent opportunity to study and experience Japanese culture. Those students who are participating in the full year program will live in one of the ICU campus dormitories and will be assigned a Japanese roommate. We recommend the traditional dormitory for an authentic, demanding and rewarding cultural experience where all residence hall members participate in meetings and activities to govern themselves (Canada House (male), Third Women’s Dormitory, Fourth Women’s Dormitory). The new dorms on the ICU campus (Ginko House, Zelkova House, Oak House, and Momi-Maple house) are more modern, but may not come with dorm traditions and may not give you as strong a sense of belonging. Also keep in mind that new dorms have a strict curfew.

Students who are applying to ICU through the Middlebury School in Japan are asked not to apply for Global House. This dorm is designated as an “English House” for ICU students; therefore their mission is incompatible with the spirit of our Language Pledge.

Students who study in Japan for only one trimester live in the Dialogue House, which is the dorm on the ICU campus for international students. Your roommate in this dormitory will, by definition, have to be another international student. We realize that this housing arrangement will give you an additional challenge for upholding the spirit of the Language Pledge. The School in Japan will provide support to help you find organizations in which to volunteer or participate so that you become integrated into the local community life outside campus.

We do not offer home-stay options. Home-stays certainly offer an opportunity to learn much about Japan outside of campus; however, one significant limitation is that home-stay families are located at a distance from the university. Please know that this is the reality of Tokyo life; a one- to two-hour commute to the workplace is considered normal. We encourage you to focus your time engaging in community activities on and around campus than to spend the time commuting. Students have several opportunities to stay with local host families during excursions, so please utilize these opportunities and interact with local families.

The dining hall is not open for breakfast and dinner as of Winter 2023. Small kitchenettes are available in the dormitories. Students are encouraged to cook food by themselves, or buy food off-campus. Some restaurants and convenience stores are available near ICU campus.

Students are not permitted to move into the dorm room earlier than the day before the start of orientation.

Our partner university, ICU, offers a wide variety of campus housing options.
