Be aware of how much time you spend on the computer and in your room. Most of your free time should be spent exploring life outside of the virtual world. Please make sure you have an antivirus and antimalware software installed.

For communicating with home (or with friends in Taiwan) Line will be, by far, the most convenient service for you. It would be a good idea to download this, and also to have your family/close friends download this so that you can communicate with them while you are in Taiwan.

Campus

Most of the NSYSU campus is covered by a WiFi network (TANetRoaming). This is accessible by all NSYSU students, including students at Middlebury in Taiwan.

Dorms

The dorm area is equipped with wired Internet, and there are Ethernet plugs in every dorm room. (Cables can be purchased on campus.) Internet usage in the dorms is limited to 6GB/student/day. (For reference, streaming 1 hour of Netflix consumes about 1 GB of data.) If you exceed 6GB, your internet account will be frozen for seven days.

Voice & Video Chat

Students usually use Zoom, Line, or Facetime to keep in touch with family. We recommend that students download the Line chat app, which can also be used for free video- and voice-calls to friends and family in the US. (It’s also a good idea to have your family, and your closest friends download this, as well.)

VPN

If you will be visiting mainland China, you will need a VPN (Virtual Private Network) to access many of your regular services. (A commercial VPN can also increase your computer’s/phone’s security wherever you are, though they can cause problems when trying to access banking sites, and other very secure websites. Just disconnect the VPN to access your bank’s website.) In order to be able to access Gmail, the New York Times, Instagram, and other blocked sites, you’ll need to set up a VPN on your computer and/or phone. There are a lot of commercial VPN providers. Our staff in China have found VeeeVPN to offer good service there at a decent monthly rate. It doesn’t offer as many features as services like ExpressVPN or NordVPN, but those services aren’t currently working in China.

Past students have reported that, unsurprisingly, the less time they spend online while abroad, the more they learn about the Chinese language and Taiwan in general. Accordingly, it would be wise to minimize your time on TikTok, Instagram, Netflix, etc. Try to keep your online experiences in Chinese. The on-site staff can suggest things for you in regard to this.

Bring your laptop to Taiwan.
