Host Universities
Buenos Aires
Universidad Católica Argentina: Founded in 1958, the Universidad Católica Argentina enrolls over 20,000 students, and over 800 international students per year. UCA has a very wide range of programs. There are ten major facultades (schools) teaching humanities, psychology, economics, agriculture, social sciences, law and canonical law, engineering, theology, medicine, and musical arts, all on their 100,000 square-meter main campus located on the banks of the Río de la Plata.
Universidad de Buenos Aires: The Universidad de Buenos Aires is one of the oldest, largest (over 250,000 students), and most prestigious public institutions in Latin America. UBA’s history of social activism and political opposition experienced a decline during the era of dictatorship, from which it is now emerging. A wide range of courses is available through the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters (Humanities) and the Faculty of Social Sciences. It is, however, expected that students take all their courses within a single faculty to achieve the greatest benefits of immersion. While UBA is a typical large urban university, coursework is nonetheless widely regarded as among the most demanding available; students are highly motivated and socially involved.
Universidad Torcuato di Tella: Located in the residential district of Núñez, UTDT is a small (1,600 students), private, non-profit undergraduate and graduate-level institution born of a highly respected foundation and research institute a decade ago. It offers demanding, rigorous, and specialized programs, and the majority of its professors are full-time teachers and researchers. It is especially strong in the social sciences, particularly economics, history, political science, and international relations.
Montevideo
Universidad Católica del Uruguay: This private liberal arts institution was only founded in 1985, but the university can trace its roots back to the first Jesuit educational institution in the country in the late 1600s. Católica is particularly strong in the social science and the natural sciences.
Universidad ORT: A private institution of some 8,500 students, ORT is sponsored by the World ORT, an international educational foundation and social agency founded by Russian Jews in St. Petersburg in 1880 and now centered in London. Unlike most Latin American institutions, it takes pride in its full-time faculty, most with PhDs, who divide their time between teaching and research in the U.S. model. The university is especially strong in the social sciences and pre-professional areas such as business, communications, and architecture.
Universidad de la República: A public university, the Universidad de la República offers a wide range of courses through its different facultades, located throughout the city of Montevideo. Students attending UDELAR can choose to enroll in courses within one or two of the following facultades:
- Facultad de Artes, which offers courses in visual arts, graphic design, sculpture, photography, media, drawing, painting and pottery. The university’s music school is also housed in the Facultad de Artes, offering courses in composition, musicology, orchestral and choral conducting, and electroacoustic music.
- Facultad de Ciencias Sociales, which offers courses in political science, sociology, social work, and development.
- Facultad de Humanidades y Ciencias de la Educación, which offers courses in history, literature, linguistics, anthropology, education, and philosophy.
- Facultad de Psicología, which offers courses in psychology.
